Letters of Recommendation

Now is the time to consider which teachers you will be asking for a letter of recommendation.  Many colleges require two teacher letters of recommendation and one counselor letter of recommendation.  When thinking about which teachers you want to ask to write you a letter a recommendation, consider the following:
  • Typically, most colleges want to hear from teachers you had in the junior year.  However, this year many colleges have already said that it will be OK for students to secure letters from teachers you had in 10th grade.
  • Consider teachers that taught you in multiple classes.
  • If you have an intended major in mind, consider asking a teacher from that core content area.
  • Most importantly, ask teachers that know you well and can speak highly of your academic potential.
Now that you have a few teachers in mind, follow the steps below:
  1. Request a letter of recommendation from your teachers and counselor in SCOIR.  SCOIR>MY COLLEGES>RECOMMENDATIONS AND FEE WAIVERS>REQUEST A RECOMMENDATION
  2. After requesting a letter of recommendation from your counselor, you must complete the 4 question survey in SCOIR.  SCOIR>PROFILE PICTURE>SURVEYS>LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION QUESTIONNAIRE
  3. Now is the time to begin asking for letters of recommendation. Start by asking your counselor!  You should ask for all letter of recommendations before the end of the school year.
The attached slides presentation walks you through the process of requesting letters of recommendation and completing the counselor survey.
