Garnet Valley High School Gets "Mindful"

High School begins unique Mindfulness Program for students and staff

Thanks to two local studios, Yoga Underground and EmpoweredYoga, Garnet Valley High School students and staff will have the opportunity to begin a unique Mindfulness program. The student program, called Mindful Mondays, will run for 8 weeks during enhancement beginning February 27. Staff will have a similar opportunity after school with an additional focus on how mindfulness can be beneficial in the classroom. Mindfulness is a research based secular practice that can have dozens of physical and mental health benefits for adults and students alike.

High school students can see a reduction in stress and anxiety and increased empathy and concentration. Mindfulness can give teens a tool to take a break, come back to the present moment, and re-discover their inner strength and their inner resilience. From that place, they can cope better, see a situation more clearly, and make wiser decisions on how to respond. They are also inundated with technology and social media and this can give their minds a break from all the chatter. Studies done on mindfulness in schools suggest that it helps teens to focus better, to achieve better results, and to exhibit more positive behaviours in the classroom.

According to Danielle Linder, owner of Yoga Underground, "Mindfulness addresses our emotional wellness and our connections to our body which facilitates empowering the self to be its best. I passionately believe this is a skill that should be taught right along with other core curriculums. This emotional wellness provides people the ability to feel loved, strong, creative, and connected which leads us to make better choices for ourselves."

This effort to bring Mindfulness to the high school was born from the newly formed Wellness Committee headed by assistant principal Jessica Knier. Ms. Knier said she is "optimistic these pilot programs will be successful and hopefully become permanent programs in the near future." Dr. Lavender, a teacher and member of the wellness committee believes, "If we can teach students to bring this type of thinking into their everyday lives, it could have a positive long-term effect. By incorporating mindfulness we are addressing the whole student, not just the academics."

Both Yoga Underground and Empowered Yoga are offering special discounts to any student, staff member or community member that is interested in continuing the practice outside of school. For more information see the links to each studio below.
